Karachi residents continue to face street crimes, including snatching and robbery, with no relief in sight regarding lawlessness in Pakistan’s economic capital.
Interestingly, in a recent event, a citizen not only lost his vehicle to unidentified carjackers but was also compelled to pay a ransom of Rs500,000 amid Karachi police inaction.
Geo News reported the Karachi police’s failure to act promptly, even after immediate notification. The police allegedly postponed case registration until after the general elections on February 8.
The theft occurred on February 3, outside the victim’s New Karachi Sector 11 home. Despite repeated attempts to file a report, police hesitated to open a first information report (FIR). Remarkably, the complaint was eventually filed, supported by clear CCTV evidence of the theft.
The victim received a call demanding a Rs500,000 ransom for the vehicle, now reportedly in Chaman, Balochistan, with photographic proof sent to him. He paid Rs50,000 online as a preliminary ransom.
The victim criticized the police for failing to recover the vehicle despite having substantial evidence and information.
Police have acknowledged filing the initial complaint and stated the case would be transferred to the Anti-Vehicle Lifting Cell (AVLC) for detailed investigation.
