Inspector General of Sindh Police, Ghulam Nabi Memon, asserted that Karachi sees fewer crimes than other major cities like Delhi, Dhaka, and Tehran.
In a recent interview with the private news channel Express in Karachi, the Inspector General of Sindh Police discussed the issue of escalating crime in the city. He revealed that this year, there have been 58 murders in Karachi as a result of robbery attempts. He further disclosed that 41 cases have been successfully resolved, with the suspects either arrested or deceased.
Memon reported that the Sindh Police have apprehended 53 individuals linked to these crimes, with 17 suspects killed in various police operations. He also touched upon legislative advancements, noting the recent passage of a law for the electronic tagging of criminals.
The upcoming fiscal year’s budget includes provisions for tagging up to 4,000 suspects, signalling a move towards more technologically advanced policing measures, including the long-awaited installation of smart cameras throughout Karachi.
The IG also highlighted concerns about the capacity of Karachi’s Central Jail, which is grappling with overcrowding issues, having received over 6,000 criminals in the first five months of the year alone. This situation underscores the pressing challenges facing the city’s penal system and the urgent need for infrastructural and operational reforms.
