Karachi, a sprawling metropolis, has long struggled with parking challenges. To address these, the Sindh High Court (SHC) recently took up the matter, directing provincial authorities to look into the rampant issue of illegal parking across the city.
During the recent hearing at the SHC, representatives from both the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) and the advocate petitioner were present to discuss the concerns surrounding unauthorized parking and unwarranted parking fees.
The petitioner shed light on the pervasive problem of double parking throughout Karachi. Following this revelation, the court directed him to specify the zones most affected by this parking malpractice.
As discussions ensued, it became clear that the responsibility of providing parking facilities lies with the District Municipal Corporation (DMC) and KMC. Yet, the court expressed astonishment over the lack of regulation, questioning how these bodies could permit rampant double parking.
Debate Over Parking Plaza’s Purpose
The conversation took a turn when the court, emphasizing the large investments in creating the parking plaza, questioned its underutilization. When probed about the purpose and administration of the parking plaza, the KMC advocate redirected the query towards the Karachi Development Authority (KDA), stating the plaza fell under their domain.
Concern Over Motorcycle Parking Fees
One of the main contentions during the proceedings was the issue of inflated motorcycle parking fees. At the same time, the official fee is Rs10, the so-called “parking mafia” allegedly extorting Rs30 for motorcycle spots.
With a view to actionable solutions, the court urged the Sindh government’s legal representative to identify areas plagued by illegal parking. Showcasing a proactive approach, the court adjourned the hearing until September 26, ensuring a thorough investigation.
