Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani has sent a letter to IHC Chief Justice Aamer Farooq requesting contempt of court proceedings against individuals targeting him on social media.
This move followed a similar complaint by Justice Kayani’s colleague, Justice Babar Sattar, who reported being the subject of social media propaganda. Subsequently, it was determined that this complaint would initiate a contempt of court case, leading to potential actions against the perpetrators.
Sources indicate that a bench will be formed today, based on the letters from the two judges, to address the contempt charges stemming from the negative social media campaigns.
A parallel campaign targeted Justice Sattar, falsely claiming he held American citizenship. The IHC clarified on April 28 that Justice Sattar holds only Pakistani citizenship and described the accusations as “defamatory and baseless.”
The court detailed that while Justice Sattar’s wife and children are dual citizens of Pakistan and the US, they returned to Pakistan in 2021 when he became a judge at the IHC and now reside in Islamabad.
The IHC’s press release also noted that Justice Sattar’s confidential information, including his family’s travel documents and details about his properties from tax returns, were being shared online along with baseless allegations.
Despite the high court’s efforts to clear misinformation through a press release, the targeted social media campaigns have continued. Consequently, the court has resolved to pursue legal action against those responsible for contempt.
