ByteDance, the Beijing-based tech giant known for TikTok, has launched Jimeng AI, a cutting-edge artificial intelligence text-to-video platform.

The new platform, available only in China, enables users to create images and videos from text prompts. It is accessible via mobile apps on Apple’s App Store and Android. However, unlike some competitors, Jimeng AI requires a paid subscription for access without offering a free tier.

Jimeng AI was developed by ByteDance’s subsidiary, Faceu Technology, and launched as a mobile app on the App Store on August 6 for Chinese users and Android on July 31. Although the website client is accessible globally, usage requires an account linked to a registered Douyin (TikTok outside China) account.

TikTok owner ByteDance launched a generative AI platform called "Jimeng" today to compete with Kuaishou’s Kling and OpenAI’s text-to-video generator Sora. The app adopts an in-app purchase model and charges a membership fee of CNY69 (USD9.70) per month or CNY659 (USD92) a year. pic.twitter.com/GtcGbyLiwZ

To generate content, users must select one of three subscription plans. Prices range from CNY 69 (about Rs. 808) for a monthly auto-renewal plan to CNY 79 (roughly Rs. 926) for a single month and CNY 659 (approximately Rs. 7,726) for an annual subscription. Each plan allows for generating around 2,050 images or 168 videos per month.

The platform also includes features for editing and refining images with follow-up prompts and allows sharing via URL or saving directly to devices.

A ‘Personalised Creations’ feature enables users to customize and replicate others’ work using their prompts, though details on this function’s specifics remain vague. It is also uncertain if Jimeng AI will integrate with Douyin to facilitate content creation directly on the platform.
