Lawrence made the statements in an interview with actor and producer Viola Davis, published by Variety.
Lawrence said of her performance in “The Hunger Games”: “Nobody has ever put a woman in the lead of an action movie because it wouldn’t work. Girls and boys can identify with a male lead, but boys can’t relate with a female lead.”
Lawrence said, “It makes me so delighted every time a movie blasts through those ideas and exposes it’s a falsehood to keep certain individuals out of movies.”
Social media pounced on Lawrence’s words, pointing out that other actresses have starred in action flicks., including Sigourney Weaver in the “Alien” films, Angelina Jolie in “Salt” and “Tomb Raider,” Uma Thurman in “Kill Bill: Volume 1” and “Kill Bill: Volume 2,” and Michelle Yeoh in “Supercop,” “Magnificent Warriors,” and “Yes, Madam!”
