Iran’s Revolutionary Guards announced on Sunday that they had arrested 12 individuals for allegedly collaborating with Israel and planning acts that threatened Iran’s security.
The statement highlighted accusations against Israel and its Western allies, particularly the United States, alleging attempts to destabilize the regions of Gaza and Lebanon and extend these destabilizing efforts into Iran.
The context for these arrests is a backdrop of escalating tensions in the Middle East, particularly following incidents where thousands of pagers and walkie-talkies used by Hezbollah in Lebanon malfunctioned in explosions widely attributed to Israel. This incident has contributed to some of the most intense exchanges of fire across the Israel-Lebanon border in recent years, coinciding with the ongoing conflict in Gaza that has lasted nearly a year.
The Revolutionary Guards reported that the arrests were made in six provinces in Iran, though the specific timings of these arrests were not disclosed.
Additionally, in late July, the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the political leader of Hamas, occurred in Tehran. Iranian authorities have blamed Israel for this act, although Israel has not acknowledged any responsibility for the incident.
