Today’s “Glowtime” event at Apple’s Cupertino headquarters will showcase the iPhone 16 series, which could feature new generative AI capabilities.
The launch could mark a significant evolution for the iPhone, accounting for about 60% of Apple’s $39 billion revenue last quarter. The tech giant has seen a slump in sales as consumers hold onto older models longer. Apple aims to revitalize interest with advanced AI features, possibly transforming the iPhone’s user experience.
Forrester’s principal analyst, Dipanjan Chatterjee, emphasized that the iPhone 16’s significance lies within its advanced software, dubbed “Apple Intelligence,” introduced in June. This suite promises AI-driven enhancements like image editing and interactive messaging, though it may not deliver the groundbreaking AI applications seen by competitors like OpenAI or Google.
Apple also plans to upgrade Siri, its digital assistant, enhancing its interface with a dynamic light feature on the home screen. This improvement seeks to position Siri alongside advanced AI technologies such as OpenAI’s GPT-4o.

Analysts suggest that Apple will introduce custom chips to support these AI enhancements, potentially including a more robust Siri that could integrate across all apps. This strategy indicates a shift from mere incremental hardware improvements to significant software innovations that could redefine the iPhone experience.
Meanwhile, Google has recently launched its AI-powered Pixel 9 smartphones, positioning them as a direct competitor to the iPhone. Although Pixels hold a minor share of the global market, Google emphasizes real-world AI applications over mere promises, signalling a shift towards more practical smartphone AI uses. Samsung continues integrating AI across its product range, reinforcing its market leadership.
