Instagram is implementing several profile-based modifications that may not align with all user preferences. In August 2024, the Meta-owned platform initiated tests for vertical grids on profiles, and it is now extending this feature to all users.
The change transforms the traditional square grids into vertical grids, potentially affecting the carefully curated profiles that utilize multiple grids to create a distinct visual layout. Furthermore, Instagram will enable users to customize post thumbnails and reorder their grid. The platform also extends the maximum duration for Reels from 90 seconds to three minutes.
Instagram Adopts 4:3 Thumbnails for Profiles.
Instagram’s head, Adam Mosseri, revealed that vertical grids for user profiles will launch this week, shifting from the traditional 1:1 aspect ratio to a 4:3 ratio. While reactions have been mixed, with some users embracing the change and others expressing dissatisfaction, Mosseri emphasized a number of upcoming improvements to profiles aimed at helping users adjust to these updates.
“Most uploaded photos and videos on Instagram are vertical, and rectangles better showcase these visuals,” Mosseri commented, adding that the new layout aims to foster a “simpler, cleaner” environment.
The update has faced criticism from some users. For instance, Punktmidi, a creator on the platform, remarked, “You destroyed millions of well-curated 1:1 grids.” Another user, @matilde.alcini, suggested Mosseri should “just let people choose if they want squares or rectangles on the grid.”
Mosseri mentioned that future profile versions would allow users to arrange their grids more effectively aesthetically. Instagram also enhances the customization options for post thumbnails, giving users more control over their profile’s appearance.
Additionally, Instagram plans to integrate Story Highlights into the grid with a dedicated tab. Mosseri described the current arrangement of Highlights—positioned between the bio and the grid in circular icons—as “visually complicated” and noted that they lower the grid’s position. The platform is also developing a feature that will permit users to reorder their grid and post directly, although these posts will not appear in the feed.
“This plan might change as we iterate over the next couple of months, but I’m hoping sharing our intentions early will help avoid any more harsh surprises,” added Mosseri.
Instagram Reels Extended to Three Minutes
Mosseri also announced that Reels’ maximum length will be expanded to three minutes, aligning Instagram with other vertical video-focused platforms like TikTok and YouTube. This update follows TikTok’s introduction of three-minute videos in July 2021 and YouTube’s extension of Shorts’ duration in October 2024. At the time of this publication, Gadgets 360 had not confirmed the availability of three-minute Reel uploads on Android and iOS.
