Approximately 519 persons tested positive for HIV in Islamabad in the last 10 months.
An official at the National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination (NHSR&C) revealed that most of the number consists of 18- to 25-year-old males who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender people.
The source, who sought anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media, said 40%-45% of the 519 new HIV patients are “young guys in the age category of 18-25” who engaged in “unsafe sexual practices.”
38 new HIV infections were reported at PIMS Islamabad in January, 61 in February, 40 on March, 34 in April, 45 in May, and 74 in June. 53 new HIV patients registered with PIMS in July, 61 in August, 64 in September, and 49 in October.
Considering the rising number of HIV cases in the capital, we’ve opened a new HIV treatment center at Polyclinic Hospital in Islamabad. It’s been operational for a few weeks but hasn’t been officially opened.
