Huawei announced on Saturday its goal to secure 100,000 applications for its Harmony OS operating system in the coming months as it drives towards greater self-reliance.
During a conference, Huawei Chairman Xu Zhijun noted that while over 15,000 applications currently support consumers’ basic needs, the ecosystem requires more personalized and boutique apps to mature fully.
Xu emphasized in a WeChat post that reaching 100,000 apps is crucial for the Harmony ecosystem to meet consumer demands adequately within six to 12 months. This goal underlines the urgency of developing domestic technologies as tensions between China and the US escalate, especially with President-elect Donald Trump poised to intensify policies on China.

Launched five years ago in response to US sanctions that blocked access to Google’s Android, Huawei has since developed Harmony OS into an open-source platform. Xu explained that the sanctions pushed Huawei to expedite the development of its operating system. He stressed the importance of the operating system’s adoption, noting that regardless of its advancements, it would be useless without widespread usage.

Xu called on developers to expand the app offerings and encouraged government agencies, state companies, and social organizations to adopt Harmony OS. He also appealed to consumers for patience with the system’s early stages, stating, “The more people use it, the more quickly it will mature.”

Huawei first unveiled Harmony in August 2019, following trade restrictions imposed by Washington over alleged security risks, which Huawei has consistently denied. Xu expressed a determined outlook, concluding, “No way back leads to victory. Huawei will unwaveringly invest in developing the Harmony ecosystem and strive to make the impossible possible.”
