The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has announced that it will discontinue free VPN services and mandate registration for their continued use.
PTA measure ensures legal and uninterrupted access for software houses, call centres, freelancers, and foreign embassies, facilitating their operations within the legal framework. Users can register their VPNs for free on the official PTA and PSEB websites.
VPN users must complete their registration at https://ipregistration.pta.gov.pk. The PTA has also posted additional guidelines and details about the registration process on its social media channels.
This announcement follows numerous public grievances regarding VPN disruptions, which have sparked widespread criticism of the government’s internet policies. Notably, recent governmental measures have included firewalls to block access to social media sites and other web services, including ‘X’ (formerly known as Twitter), accessible only through VPNs.

It is noteworthy that even government officials, including Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, use VPNs to access these blocked sites. In a recent incident, Prime Minister Sharif engaged on the platform ‘X’ to send a congratulatory message to U.S. President Donald Trump, which led to criticism due to the prevailing governmental restrictions.
What is a VPN?
A Virtual Private Network (VPN) is designed to secure an internet connection and enhance user privacy. It encrypts users’ data transmissions through a secure server, concealing their IP address and assigning a new one. This technology is widely used worldwide, including in Pakistan, to access websites and applications restricted by government policies.
