Islamabad: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday said that the promotions of the civil servants was based on merit, transparency and qualifications and was not on provincial preferences.

The prime minister was responding to a point raised by Syed Khurshid Shah in the Parliament House who wanted to know why the civil servants from Sindh were being ignored in the promotions of officers of BS 21 and BS 22. He said that promotions in the higher grades were an issue of merit and not a provincial matter.

Nawaz said that he has neither appointed the Public Service Commissioin Chairman nor the government has any role in the promotions of civil servants. He said that he has full faith in merit and transparency alone as these were the key to good governance. He added that the government has a principled stance on the matter and remains committed to ensuring that only the deserving get promoted.

The prime minister said that the performance, integrity and good repute of an officer were the real attributes that mattered. He assured Syed Khurshid Shah that there would not be any discrepancy in this regard and said he would personally review the matter when it was brought to his knowledge. He assured in case of any injustice, it would be rectified.
