In a distressing incident of online fraud, a 53-year-old French woman named Anne lost $850,000 to a scammer impersonating Hollywood actor Brad Pitt. Anne, who was going through marital troubles, believed she was in a romantic relationship with Pitt and sent money to cover what she thought were his medical expenses.
The deceit started when Anne received a message on Instagram from someone claiming to be the mother of Angelina Jolie’s former husband. The scammer then took on Pitt’s identity, sending Anne love poems, affectionate messages, and AI-generated videos and images to solidify the illusion of their relationship.
As Anne became more invested, the scammer manipulated her further with fabricated hospital photos, claiming Pitt needed urgent medical help. During their communication, Anne transferred 830,000 euros (approximately $850,000) to the scammer, believing she supported the actor she thought was romantically involved.
Anne only realizes the scam when she learns of Brad Pitt’s real-life relationship with jewellery designer Ines De Ramon. This revelation highlighted her vulnerability and underscored the sophisticated techniques scammers use to prey on emotions.
This case is a stark reminder of the dangers of online scams and the importance of verifying identities before transferring money or sharing personal information. With online scams growing more complex, vigilance and scepticism are essential, especially regarding unsolicited requests for money. Authorities are currently investigating Anne’s case, who now hopes her painful experience will help others avoid similar traps.
