After being found guilty in the Toshakhana case, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has disqualified the former Prime Minister and PTI Chairman, Imran Khan, for five years. The ECP, in its notification, cited Khan’s corrupt practices as the reason, as outlined in Section 167 of the Elections Act, 2017. He has also been de-notified as the candidate from NA-45 Kurram-l.
On August 5, 2023, Judge Humayun Dilawar sentenced Khan to three years imprisonment and a Rs100,000 fine after finding him guilty of corruption in the Toshakhana case. Khan misused his Prime Ministerial position to sell state gifts worth over Rs140 million ($490,000) received from foreign dignitaries. Post-conviction, Khan was transferred to Attock Jail, where his counsel reports he has been given C-class facilities and is in unsatisfactory conditions. A plea for upgraded facilities and Khan’s transfer to Adiala jail has been filed in the Islamabad High Court (IHC).
