The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) of Pakistan has issued a public advisory regarding the increased incidents of WhatsApp account compromises, highlighting the necessity for enhanced digital security measures.

The FIA spokesperson reported a notable uptick in such incidents, particularly affecting women’s accounts, where cybercriminals gain unauthorized access and exploit personal data, including chats, photos, and videos.

The spokesperson elaborated that cybercriminals employ advanced techniques such as phishing and social engineering to infiltrate WhatsApp accounts. These strategies often involve deceptive messages that coax users into disclosing personal information or clicking on harmful links.

The FIA has provided specific recommendations for effectively securing WhatsApp accounts to counteract these threats. Users are encouraged to enable two-step verification within the app’s settings, which offers an additional security layer to thwart unauthorized access.

Furthermore, the agency advises users to exercise caution by refraining from opening messages, photos, videos, or files from unrecognized numbers, as these could contain malicious links or files capable of compromising device security or account integrity. Regular review and updates of WhatsApp privacy settings are also recommended to limit access to personal information.

In case of an account compromise, individuals were urged to contact the FIA through their helpline in 1991 or visit the nearest FIA office for assistance. It is crucial to engage with WhatsApp support to regain control of their account and take necessary security steps. Moreover, notifying close friends, family, and colleagues about the breach is essential to prevent further fraudulent activities from the compromised account.
