At least one person died, and several others sustained injuries following a massive explosion near Jinnah International Airport in Karachi. Home Minister Zia Ul Hassan Lanjar suggested that an improvised explosive device (IED) might have caused the blast.
The explosion’s sound reached various parts of Karachi, including Karimabad, Defence, and Jamshed Road. Television footage showed large clouds of smoke and flames erupting from the site.
Malir, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), confirmed that the explosion occurred near a traffic signal at the airport. A police official reported that early reports indicated an oil tanker had exploded, igniting multiple vehicles at the site.
Emergency services, including law enforcement and fire department teams, responded promptly. Rescue officials reported multiple injuries from the blast, and medical teams quickly transported the injured to the hospital.
In response to the incident, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah requested a comprehensive report from the Malir SSP. “We need to ascertain the facts,” the Chief Minister stated, emphasizing the need for the best possible medical care for the injured.
Minister Lanjar announced the start of an investigation into the explosion, with efforts to gather CCTV footage underway. “Reports are suggesting that it was an IED explosion,” he noted, indicating the possibility of a deliberate attack.
