Enraged villagers who lost their relatives in a toxic effluence related accident ransacked the sugar mill and set its building on fire in the Ramak area of Dera Ismail Khan on Saturday.
Police arrested seven employees, including the general manager and production manager, of the Chashma Sugar Mills No 2 after registering a case against them in connection with the death on Friday of 10 people in the drain filled with extremely hazardous toxic effluent from the mills.
The protesters gathered outside the factory and entered it after smashing its main gate.
They ransacked its main building and torched the ethanol plant, GM’s office, zonal office and record office.
Police had to resort to baton-charge and firing in the air to disperse the protesters. Four protesters and a police constable were injured.
Meanwhile, the 10 victims of the incident were buried in Palwan village on Saturday. Thousands of people attended the funeral prayers.
