The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has announced a crucial deadline for the upcoming general elections. As election campaigns intensify for the polls next month, the ECP has informed candidates and political parties that campaigning must cease after midnight on February 6, 2024.
This directive is based on Section 182 of the Elections Act 2017, which prohibits any political activity after this deadline, including public meetings and processions. The ECP has warned that legal action will be taken against those who violate this provision.
Preparations and Conduct Guidelines for the Elections
Shahid Ashraf Tarar, the caretaker Federal Minister for Communications Maritime Affairs and Railways, met with Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja. Tarar oversees the election preparations and briefed the CEC on the efforts of the federal and provincial governments.
Furthermore, the ECP recently issued its “Code of Conduct for Security Personnel.” This document outlines the expected behaviour of security forces during the election. It emphasizes their duty to remain unbiased and act within the legal framework. The protocol excludes the armed and civil armed forces, focusing instead on law enforcement agencies (LEAs).
These agencies are responsible for ensuring the security of ballot papers and polling bags. The ECP has stressed the importance of impartiality and neutrality for security personnel, highlighting their role in facilitating a peaceful and transparent polling process. The commission has also warned against any actions preventing voters from casting their votes.
