With the general elections approaching, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) is set to complete ballot paper printing by February 2. The electoral body is simultaneously delivering ballot papers across all provinces.
Ballot Printing and Distribution
Three government presses are currently printing ballots. The process, which began on January 16 following symbol allotment by returning officers (ROs), is progressing satisfactorily. The ECP spokesperson confirmed the completion of printing within four days. ROs and district administrations distribute ballot papers and utilize road and air transport for efficiency.
Additionally, the ECP introduced the 8300 SMS service for public access to polling station information. Voters can text their ID numbers to 8300 for vote details, ensuring smooth polling station access.
The commission has trained 970,000 out of 976,000 required polling staff, covering 96% of the total need. The remaining personnel will complete training in four days.
Addressing Misinformation and Incidents
Reacting to media reports about a fatwa in Kohistan banning women from campaigning, the ECP requested a report from Kohistan Upper’s district monitoring officer. The officer reported the news as a misconception. The ECP emphasized that any obstruction to women’s campaigning or voting could lead to action under Section 9 of the Elections Act.
The ECP is also investigating incidents in Karachi involving political party clashes and postal ballot snatching in the Swabi district. Reports from the chief secretary and IG are awaited for appropriate action under election laws.
