The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has decided to hold local government elections in Punjab during the last week of April 2023.
The spokesman cited the meeting held by the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), Sikandar Sultan Raja, to review the calendar for municipal elections in Punjab to assert that an agreement was achieved following extensive deliberations.
According to the spokeswoman, the meeting was informed that local government legislation had been altered twice, requiring the ECP to perform local constituency demarcation twice.
The terms of the local bodies of Punjab expired on January 1, 2022.
According to him, the provincial government notified the Punjab Local Government Act on November 16, 2022, and the ECP would have to redistrict the constituencies for the third time by the new law.
The spokesperson noted that the Punjab government had yet to announce Punjab local government constituency rules and Punjab local government Conduct of Election Rules.
