The Emergency Operation Center (ECO) Coordinator issued an official statement on Sunday, revealing the detection of the Poliovirus in environmental samples sourced from various districts in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. This unsettling revelation is set to trigger a wave of responses aimed at combatting the spread of the virus.
Upon confirmation of the Poliovirus presence, immediate steps are being taken to initiate an anti-polio campaign across seven affected districts within the province. This swift action aims to address the situation and prevent further virus spread.
Beginning on Monday, the anti-polio drive is scheduled in Peshawar, Nowshera, Mohmand, Hangu, Khyber, Kohat, and Charsadda. The targeted action hopes to mitigate the impact of the virus and reduce the risk posed to public health.
In addition to these districts, the campaign will also extend its reach to Pak-Afghan refugee camps. This step ensures that even the most vulnerable populations are included in the vaccination process.
To ensure the safe operation of the polio teams, as many as 14,000 police personnel have been mobilized for their security, highlighting the serious nature of the situation and the priority given to the campaign’s smooth operation.
Poliovirus Detection in Karachi
Earlier this month, Dr. Shahzad Baig, the head of the polio program, reported the detection of the Poliovirus in environmental samples from Karachi’s Gadap area, collected in May. The virus was identified in samples taken from Gadap Town UC-4, in the Sohrab Goth area, on May 15th.
Dr. Baig explained that the virus had previously been confined to the southern districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The report from Karachi was the city’s first instance of the Poliovirus this year, underlining the need for vigilant monitoring and timely responses.
Polio: A Global Perspective
While Polio has been virtually eradicated worldwide, it persists in Afghanistan and some parts of Pakistan, including neighboring areas. Several factors contribute to its continued existence in these regions, including inaccessible areas, large-scale displacements, and suspicion towards foreign interventions that obstruct eradication efforts. Despite these challenges, the ongoing fight against polio continues with the aim of eliminating this debilitating disease.
