The US Coast Guard revealed the recovery of more debris and potential human remains from the Titan submersible, which tragically failed during its mission to the Titanic in June. The sub, owned by the US-based OceanGate, faced a catastrophic implosion, losing all five crew members. The accident led to a Marine Board of Investigation being initiated, the highest probe level by the Coast Guard.
Details on the Tragic Accident and Subsequent Investigations
On June 18, during its descent, the Titan imploded, with its failure confirmed four days later. Some wreckage and potential human remains were already retrieved in late June. The tragedy involved British explorer Hamish Harding, French submarine specialist Paul-Henri Nargeolet, Pakistani-British businessman Shahzada Dawood with his son Suleman, and OceanGate Expeditions’ CEO Stockton Rush. After the submersible lost communication, it’s believed the crew died instantly due to the immense underwater pressure.
Reports suggest that OceanGate overlooked safety warnings regarding the submersible, which had an unusual carbon fibre hull. As mentioned by the Coast Guard, a public hearing about the incident is anticipated.
