Cillian Murphy, the Irish actor celebrated for his riveting portrayal of Tommy Shelby in ‘Peaky Blinders’, has undergone an alarming physical transformation for his latest role in Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’.
The film depicts the journey of theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer during the conception and construction of the first atomic bomb, and Murphy has risen to the occasion by altering his physique dramatically to mirror Oppenheimer’s emaciated look.
Actors often undertake physical alterations to realistically embody characters, which could involve changing the hair colour, wearing wigs, or adjusting their body weight. In Murphy’s case, to capture Oppenheimer’s appearance, he subjected himself to a difficult diet which involved extreme weight loss until he appeared almost gaunt, a far cry from his usual physique.
Murphy’s Extreme Commitment to His Role
To deliver an exceptional performance of a man burdened with guilt over creating a weapon of mass destruction, Murphy underwent an intense physical sacrifice. His extreme commitment included a stringent diet regimen where he was allowed only a single almond daily.
Florence Pugh, who portrays a journalist in close contact with Oppenheimer, revealed details about Murphy’s diet in an interview with the Extra TV program. “He was allowed to consume only one almond per day. He was so malnourished,” Pugh stated.
Murphy’s diet featured martinis and cigars, as he confessed earlier. “I like performing with my body, and Oppenheimer had a distinct physique and silhouette that I wanted to capture accurately,” Murphy shared with The New York Times. “I had to lose a lot of weight, and we worked with wardrobe and tailoring; I was very thin, almost emaciated, and subsisted on martinis and cigarettes.”
