On July 15, 2025, China accomplished a significant milestone in space exploration with the launch of the Tianzhou-9 cargo spacecraft from the Wenchang Spacecraft Launch Site in Hainan.

The Long March-7 Y10 rocket propelled the vessel into orbit, creating mesmerising “jellyfish” clouds that lit up the predawn sky and captivated global audiences on social media. Tianzhou-9 docked autonomously with the Tiangong space station’s Tianhe core module just hours later, delivering a record 6.5 tonnes of supplies. This mission supports ongoing operations for the Shenzhou-20 and upcoming Shenzhou-21 crews, reinforcing China’s leadership in independent space station technology.

@photonewspk Jellyfish Trails and Cosmic Cargo: China’s Tianzhou-9 Paints the Sky on Historic Supply Run China has marked a dazzling new chapter in its space odyssey. On July 15, 2025, the Tianzhou-9 supply ship soared into the early morning sky from Hainan’s Wenchang Spacecraft Launch Site atop a Long March-7 Y10 rocket, leaving luminous “jellyfish” rocket clouds that captivated onlookers and social media alike. Within just ten minutes, Tianzhou-9 reached orbit and soon completed a rapid, automated docking with the Tiangong space station’s Tianhe core module, a feat that underscores China’s advancing prowess in orbital logistics and spacecraft technology. This resupply mission brought nearly 6.5 tonnes of cargo including vital life-support supplies, cutting-edge scientific equipment, two new Feitian spacewalk suits, and exercise gear for the Shenzhou-20 and future Shenzhou-21 crews aboard Tiangong. Chinese taikonauts will now begin transferring the delivery which also supports ongoing experiments in space medicine and other disciplines—to keep the nation’s space ambitions healthy and thriving. As the only independently operated space station currently in orbit, Tiangong’s sustained operations signal China’s growing leadership in the next era of human spaceflight, with each mission like the spectacular Tianzhou-9 launch—bringing fresh capabilities and inspiration to Earth and beyond. #chinese #chinatiktok #Tianzhou #rocketleague #rocket #Space #Shenzhou20 #odyssey ♬ original sound – PhotoNews

The rocket lifted off at approximately 3:03 a.m. local time, reaching orbit in about 10 minutes. Spectators witnessed luminous jellyfish-like trails formed by exhaust plumes in the upper atmosphere, a rare visual effect that went viral online. The spacecraft’s solar wings deployed successfully, marking a flawless ascent. Tianzhou-9 executed a rapid automated docking, showcasing advancements in China’s orbital rendezvous technology.

Tianzhou-9’s Mission Objectives

The Tianzhou-9 spacecraft is carrying vital supplies for the crew aboard the Tiangong space station. This includes life-support materials, scientific equipment, exercise gear, and two upgraded Feitian spacesuits for extravehicular activities. The payload is intended to support experiments in space medicine and other fields, ensuring the continuation of operations on China’s independently operated space station. The taikonauts will transfer these supplies to maintain a thriving environment on the station.

As the only fully operational space station aside from the ISS, Tiangong showcases China’s increasing independence in human spaceflight. The success of Tianzhou-9 enhances logistics capabilities and lays the foundation for future missions, including lunar explorations. This launch sparks global interest in space, combining remarkable technological achievements with breathtaking visuals.
