A surging number of Canadians are backing a petition urging Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to strip billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk of his Canadian citizenship.
Qualia Reed, a British Columbia resident, launched the petition, which was sponsored by NDP MP Charlie Angus. The campaign has gained significant traction online.
The petition accuses Musk of actions detrimental to Canada’s national interests. It alleges that Musk, a prominent ally of U.S. President Donald Trump, has leveraged his wealth and influence to meddle in Canadian elections. “He’s part of a foreign government aiming to undermine Canadian sovereignty,” the document claims. It demands Trudeau revoke Musk’s dual citizenship and passport immediately.
Musk’s Canadian Roots
Born in South Africa, Musk gained Canadian citizenship through his mother, a Saskatchewan native. The Tesla and SpaceX CEO has long held dual status, but this petition marks a rare public challenge to his ties with Canada.
Over 102,000 Canadians have signed the petition, hosted on an official parliamentary platform. It will close on June 20, 2025, and then be presented in the House of Commons. While the campaign has sparked debate, there’s no sign that the government will act on the request.
