A British man has set a Guinness World Record with a giant root vegetable, a celeriac, weighing 13 pounds. Graham Barratt, a Gloucester resident, took his impressive vegetable to the Malvern Autumn Show. On Thursday, September 26, he received confirmation that his celeriac now holds the world record for the heaviest of its kind, according to UPI.
“It’s either weight or length for a giant vegetable, but beauty doesn’t count. Some of them can be quite ugly,” Barratt joked in an interview with BBC Radio.
Interestingly, Barratt also had a chance to claim the record for the second-heaviest vegetable. He brought a giant cucumber, among other large vegetables, to the Malvern Autumn Show. “I weighed it today, and it came in at 29 pounds. The world record is 30 pounds,” he explained. “That’s just how cruel the business can be at times.”
The Malvern Autumn Show, held in Gloucestershire, featured various activities, including the Great Malvern Cake Off, the Grow Zone, and the RHS Flower Show. Attendees could also enjoy the World of Animals, a family fun section, harvest activities, and a vintage valley. Numerous nurseries and bulb merchants participated in the event.
Visitors could purchase gifts, clothing, plants, food, arts and crafts, and antique and retro items.
