Anjem Choudary, a British citizen of Pakistani descent, has been handed a life sentence after being convicted on terrorism charges in the UK.
Choudary, 57, faced trial at Woolwich Crown Court, where he was accused of guiding the outlawed group Al-Muhajiroun in violation of British anti-terrorism laws.
Prosecutors at the trial detailed Choudary’s activities with the banned organization, which spanned from 2014 until his arrest on July 17 of the previous year. Additionally, Choudary had a prior conviction in 2016 for supporting ISIS, further complicating his legal challenges.
The court’s decision resulted in Choudary’s conviction on all charges, resulting in a 26-year prison sentence. Considering his current age, under the terms of the sentencing, Choudary would be eligible for release at 85.
