Mattel has faced intense scrutiny after inadvertently linking a pornography site to the packaging of their “Wicked” movie dolls, prompting an urgent damage control operation.
The error involved a misprint directing customers to an adult website instead of the intended movie homepage.
Mattel’s response was swift, with a public apology and steps to correct the misprint: “We are deeply sorry for the oversight and are taking immediate measures to address the situation. We advise parents that the website listed is unsuitable for children and recommend disposing of the packaging. For further assistance, please get in touch with Mattel customer service.”
This mishap emerged as buyers noticed the erroneous URL linking to Wicked.com, a pornographic site—instead of WickedMovie.com. The error appeared on boxes of dolls representing Glinda and Elphaba, played by Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, respectively, in the film.
The incident unfolded just days before the release of “Wicked,” casting a shadow over its debut. Retailers like Target, Kohl’s, and Amazon promptly removed the affected products from circulation.
The situation complicates matters for Ariana Grande, who was already in the public eye due to her new relationship with co-star Ethan Slater, which began under the scrutiny of tabloid speculation. In response to the rumours, Grande stressed her integrity and commitment to those she cares about, which no misreporting could undermine.
Addressing his relationship in GQ, Ethan Slater remarked on the personal challenges and the beauty arising from them over the past year, highlighting his anticipation for the future despite the public controversy.
