Prime Minister’s Advisor on National Security and Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz has urged the United Nations to resolve the Kashmir issue in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions.
In a letter to the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, Sartaj Aziz asked for the role of UN and the international community to resolve Kashmir issue.
Sartaj Aziz has also pointed out that the Jammu and Kashmir dispute is one of the longest outstanding issues on the agenda of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
He said the UNSC in its resolutions had promised holding of a plebiscite in occupied Kashmir, under the auspices of the United Nations, granting right to self-determination to the people of Kashmir and these resolutions are still valid though unimplemented to date.
The Advisor said for decades, Pakistan has been reminding the United Nations and the international community to fulfil that promise, in the interest of durable peace and security in the region.
Sartaj Aziz said in his address to the UN General Assembly on 26 September, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had also emphasised that the core issue of Jammu and Kashmir needed to be resolved. (PhotoNews /APP)
