Andrew Tate, an online influencer, and his brother Tristan were detained in Romania following a UK arrest warrant.
According to Tates’ spokesperson, the arrest late Monday concerns sexual aggression charges from a UK case dating from 2012 to 2015. The Bucharest Court of Appeal is expected to decide Tuesday on the execution of warrants from Westminster Magistrates Court, potentially initiating extradition.
Four women alleging sexual violence and abuse by Andrew Tate sought legal recourse after the UK’s Crown Prosecution Service declined prosecution. They are now pursuing a civil case funded by crowdfunding efforts.
Tristan Tate’s specific charges in the UK remain undisclosed. The Tate brothers, holding dual citizenship in the UK and the US, deny the accusations, citing a lack of new evidence.
Andrew Tate faces additional charges in Romania, including rape, human trafficking, and forming a gang for sexual exploitation, charges he denies. Following their December 2022 arrest in Romania, prosecutors indicted them and two Romanian women in June.
The legal firm representing the British accusers, McCue Jury & Partners, recently pressed for Tate’s detention and possible extradition, fearing he might flee Romania.
Matthew Jury, from the firm, welcomed the arrest warrant, emphasizing the importance of holding Tate accountable for alleged offences against multiple victims. He criticized Tate for spreading disinformation regarding his UK charges.
Tate, who gained notoriety on social media for controversial views, has claimed a lack of evidence in Romania and alleged a conspiracy against him. After initial police detention, the Tate brothers were placed under house arrest and are currently restricted from leaving Romania.
