Android users are being alerted about a malware-infected app that mimics platforms like Google Chrome to engage in fraud. This malware, specifically targeting users’ bank accounts, can access sensitive information.
Cybersecurity experts at ThreatFabric in Amsterdam have discovered a new strain of the Octo Android malware, dubbed Octo 2, which is currently spreading across Europe.
ThreatFabric identified its predecessor, Octo, as a hazardous banking trojan in April 2022. Since that time, the malware has evolved significantly. Octo 2, more sophisticated than its earlier version, poses increased detection challenges.
Hackers can utilize this app to remotely lock and mute the device’s screen, launch applications, and send malware-laden messages to contacts. Critically, this malware can infiltrate users’ SMS services, enabling hackers to intercept verification codes sent via text, further compromising security.
