The popular British drama series, “Oppenheimer”, starring Sam Waterston in the titular role, is now available for streaming on the BBC’s digital platform, iPlayer.
Previously, the BAFTA-winning, Emmy-nominated series, encompassing a total of seven episodes, was only obtainable for viewing through rental or purchase on Amazon’s Prime Video.
Oppenheimer arrival on iPlayer has been catalyzed by the global success of the recently released “Oppenheimer” movie by renowned director Christopher Nolan.
As part of the groundbreaking “Barbenheimer” cinematic event, the film made an impressive splash at the box office, generating over $405 million worldwide.
A Closer Look at the BBC’s TV Show “Oppenheimer”
Co-produced by BBC Studios, the television series spotlighted Sam Waterston in the role of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the introspective creator of the atomic bomb. It also featured David Suchet, of “Poirot” fame, portraying Edward Teller, a notable scientist at the Los Alamos National Laboratory.
Interestingly, the majority of the cast comprised American actors who were living in the UK during the time of production, with Waterston as the notable outlier.
Filmed in various locations across the UK and the US, the series was allocated a budget of $1.5 million, which, adjusted for inflation, would be approximately $5.5 million today.
A comprehensive set was constructed in Colorado Springs to depict Oppenheimer’s famed Los Alamos project, which served as the base for the scientists working on the Manhattan Project.
Variety magazine recently took a retrospective look at the intriguing history of the series, positing that it’s improbable for the BBC to green-light such a distinctly American-themed project in today’s television landscape.
