NHRC Demands Accountability for Police’s Corpse Disposal in Bihar

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India sprung into action following the unsettling emergence of a video on social media.

The footage distressingly showcased police officers nonchalantly discarding the remains of an accident victim from a bridge into a canal. The act’s blatant disrespect for the deceased has not gone unnoticed.

Violation of Human Rights Post-Mortem

Reacting to such an undignified treatment of the dead, the NHRC stepped in, recognizing the incident as a stark violation of human rights. The commission firmly asserts that human rights extend beyond life, insisting on preserving dignity even in death. The reprehensible behaviour of the police, devoid of basic human decency, triggered the NHRC’s demand for accountability.

Seeking Answers and Ensuring Responsibility

After this tragic violation, the NHRC expedited notices to high-ranking officials within Bihar’s administrative structure, specifically the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police. The commission’s directive is clear — a comprehensive report is due within four weeks.

The document must encapsulate the disciplinary actions undertaken against the erring police officers and elaborate on the measures enforced by the State in adherence to the NHRC Advisory. Issued on May 14, 2021, this advisory underscores the imperativeness of upholding the deceased’s rights, mandating their respectful handling, proper preservation, and dignified cremation or burial.
