Pakistan gears up for the 2nd match with Sri Lanka in the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023 at Hyderabad’s renowned Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium today (Tuesday).

The Pakistan squad, recovering from a shaky performance, clinched their first victory against the Netherlands. This triumph came after a less-than-ideal run in the Asia Cup 2023 and warm-up game losses against New Zealand and Australia.

Pakistan’s head coach, Grant Bradburn, while acknowledging the team’s recent inconsistencies, voiced confidence in the team’s top-order batting. Bradburn underlined the commitment to continuous growth during a press briefing in Hyderabad. “Our emphasis is on self-review and growth, particularly after our victories,” he commented.

Insights and Strategies for the Upcoming Match

Elaborating on the upcoming face-off with Sri Lanka, Bradburn accepted that the Sri Lankan team has had a slight edge over Pakistan in recent white-ball games. However, he stressed the Pakistani players’ familiarity with their Sri Lankan counterparts. Bradburn revealed, “With Mickey Arthur’s past coaching experience with the Sri Lankan side, we’ve gained valuable insights into their players during our strategy meetings.”

Bradburn further accentuated the spirit of collective performance, emphasizing the clarity of individual roles and responsibilities.

Recent Team Performances

Under Babar Azam’s leadership, Pakistan showcased resilience in their match against the Netherlands, setting a formidable score of 287 and securing a victory margin of 81 runs. In contrast, Sri Lanka entered the competition after a disheartening defeat in the Asia Cup finals against India.

Sri Lanka’s initial performance mirrors Pakistan’s, with setbacks in their warm-up matches against Bangladesh and Afghanistan and a significant defeat against South Africa. Their bowlers faced a tough time, with South Africa setting a mammoth target of 428/5.

With eyes set on the upcoming highlight match against India on October 14, Pakistan seeks to maintain their winning momentum. Concurrently, Sri Lanka aims to recalibrate their campaign, drawing motivation from their recent nail-biting win against Pakistan in the Asia Cup.

Projected Lineups

Pakistan: Abdullah Shafique, Imam-ul-Haq, Babar Azam (C), Mohammad Rizwan (wk), Saud Shakeel, Iftikhar Ahmed, Mohammad Nawaz, Shadab Khan, Hasan Ali, Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf

Sri Lanka: Kusal Perera, Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis (wk), Sadeera Samarawickrama, Charith Asalanka, Dhananjaya de Silva, Dasun Shanaka (c), Dunith Wellalage, Matheesha Pathirana, Kasun Rajitha, Maheesh Theekshana.
