On Friday, the country observed the 59th Defence Day, honouring those who fell during the 1965 conflict with India.
Guard changes occurred at locations like the Quaid’s mausoleum in Karachi and Allama Iqbal’s in Lahore. On this night in 1965, Indian forces breached the border to attack Pakistan, a move thwarted by the nation.
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) released a statement highlighting the enduring legacy of the 1965 War as a testament to the nation’s unbreakable will.
The ISPR noted, “Today, we honour the courage and sacrifices of our brave soldiers who faced overwhelming odds with protecting our homeland.”
“Fifty-nine years ago, our forces achieved a historic victory against malicious intents, a victory that remains a symbol of hope and resilience,” the statement continued.
The military also recognized the ongoing sacrifices made since 1947 in defending the nation and combating terrorism.
Moreover, the ISPR thanked veterans for their bravery and reaffirmed the armed forces’ commitment to safeguarding Pakistan against all threats.
Tributes were also paid to the families of martyrs and veterans for their enduring courage and resilience.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stated, “Today, I stand with the nation in paying homage to our brave soldiers and martyrs.”
He urged the nation to embody the ‘Spirit of September’ values and strive towards a brighter future for Pakistan.
President Asif Ali Zardari also recognized the day, emphasizing the armed forces’ readiness to defend national sovereignty and integrity.
