A $2.58 million compensation package is set to be approved for the employees of a Chinese company killed in the March 26 terror attack in Dasu.
The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) will likely approve the package in its next meeting. The committee’s secretariat has received a summary seeking $2.58 million for the five Chinese employees of China Gezhouba, a contractor on the Dasu Hydropower project.
The Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) recommended that the compensation amount be based on GDP per capita and purchasing power parity.
A compensation of Rs2.5 million is also recommended for a Pakistani national killed in the same attack.
The amount will be transferred to the Pakistan embassy in Beijing, which will then transfer the payments to the victims’ families through appropriate channels.
The IMC’s recommendations came two months after the terror attack in Shangla killed at least six people — five Chinese engineers and one Pakistani — working on the Dasu Dam.
The victims died when an explosive-laden vehicle hit their bus on the Karakoram Highway in the Bisham area.
Following the attack, the Chinese companies overseeing operations temporarily suspended civil work at the Dasu and Diamer-Bhasha Dam sites due to security concerns.
Approximately 991 Chinese engineers were working on both projects, while local staff was instructed to stay home until further notice.
