Summarily rejecting the Sindh government’s proposal for providing ‘conditional’ powers to Rangers in Karachi, the interior ministry earlier yesterday approved an extension in ‘unconditional’ Rangers’ policing powers in the city for next 60 days, according to notification issued on Tuesday.
The interior ministry has written a reply to the Sindh government’s summary, contending that the Rangers were given powers under the anti-terrorism law.
The ministry further said that the anti-terrorism law was made by the federation and that the provincial assembly could not change it.
Only parliament can change the law, it added.
It should be noted here that the Sindh government had sent a summary to federal government after Sindh Assembly adopted a resolution curtailing Rangers’ powers in Karachi.
