Sounding out Pakistan’s serious reservations, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif yesterdayday made it clear to US President Barack Obama that India was not eligible to have a permanent seat in United Nations Security Council (UNSC), Foreign Office said.
“India has been violating the UN resolutions in the occupied Kashmir for last 67 years. How can the world body allow a to violator become a member of its key council for an indefinite period?” a foreign ministry spokesperson quoted prime minister as telling Obama during a telephonic meeting.
Earlier, Obama telephoned Sharif to discuss the “evolving situation” in the region, the ministry said.
During their half-an-hour long call, the US president noted Pakistan-US relations were strong and robust
“Applauding ‘Operation Zarb-e-Azb’, Pakistan’s major military offensive against terrorists, Obama expressed satisfaction at the direction of Pakistan-US relations which was on an upward trajectory,” the statement said.
“President Obama and Sharif reaffirmed the valued relationship between the two countries and the importance of the US-Pakistan Strategic Dialogue as a framework for guiding the bilateral relationship,” a Foreign Office press aide said.
