Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) special committee is quite likely to recommend the removal of the entire selection committee since its role has not been up to the mark, an official has stated.
The preliminary meeting of the committee — headed by Shakil Sheikh and including Subhan Ahmed (PCB chief operating officer), Iqbal Qasim, Younis Khan and Misbah-ul-Haq as its members — was held in Lahore earlier yesterday.
Talking to APP, a top PCB official, on condition of anonymity, said the Board was planning to bring in some new faces in Pakistan cricket on the recommendation of its recently-constituted special committee.
The official said chairman Shaharyar Khan was not happy with the working of the Haroon Rasheed-headed selection committee, and he wanted to sack the committee.
“Haroon had not done any homework on the players while naming them in the [national] squads since he took over as the selection committee chairman,” the official stated.
He said it was the decision of Haroon to pick Khurram Manzoor for the Asia Cup T20 and World T20. “The PCB chairman was not in favour of Khurram’s inclusion in the team but Haroon put him in the squad,” the official disclosed.
Here it may be mentioned that Pakistan performed pathetically in the Asia Cup, losing to India and Bangladesh and subsequently could not qualify for the final.
The official said Haroon was so non-serious about his role as chief selector that he didn’t conduct meetings of the selection committee and used to finalise national teams on WhatsApp.
The committee, the official further said, would recommending that Shaharyar removes coaches and T20 captain also.
According to the PCB official, the special committee will be calling in everyone who they think are responsible for the team’s debacle. “They will be questioned on what improvement they have affected since they took over their respective jobs,” he said.
