Former chief justice Saeed-uz-Zaman Siddiqui has been appointed as new Sindh Governor after incumbent governor Dr Ishratul Ebad became controversial amid allegations from Pak Sarzameen Party, sources said.
According to sources, the decision to replace the governor was taken in a meeting today between President Mamnoon Hussain and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
Commenting on the development, Siddiqui confirmed that he has accepted the responsibility and that the law and order in Karachi would be his first priority.
The former CJ is considered close to the ruling party and was also the PML-N candidate for the President against PPP’s Asif Ali Zardari in 2008.
He was the chief justice during the 1999 military coup by General Pervez Musharraf. He defied the request to take a new oath under the Provisional Constitutional Order (PCO) saying that “taking oath under the PCO, in my opinion, will be a deviation from the oath I had taken to defend the constitution of 1973”.
