The New Delhi police has arrested a staff member of Pakistan High Commission for alleged espionage.
According to reports, the official was on Pakistan envoy Abdul Basit’s staff and was in possession of highly classified army-related documents. The man held for espionage is one 35-year-old Mehmood Akhtar.
Akhtar has been remanded to Chanakypuri police station under the espionage charges. However, the staffer has been released due to diplomatic immunity.
According to Indian media reports, Pakistani envoy Basit has been summoned by the external affairs ministry.
