A district and sessions court today sentenced an alleged serial rapist and his aide to 15 years in prison after convicting them in three more robbery cases.
Ali Hajiano, infamously known as the white Corolla rapist, was arrested along with his accomplice Umair Khan in January 2009 — a much hailed crack on the terror that had gripped the women of DHA and Clifton at the time. Hajiano’s reign of terror had left the people of Clifton/defence absolutely terrified.
The decision came six years after the accused were arrested.
However , as is typical with the Pakistani judicial system“All cases will be run concurrently (and not consecutively),” the judge observed. Further adding that out of about a dozen pending cases related to the gang, two will be heard in the following week.
While Hajano, an alleged serial rapist, and a member of the ‘White Corolla’ gang was known to terrorise women, Khan being a mechanic reportedly helped Hajano change number plates of the cars used for the crime.
Hajano, booked in at least 35 cases of rape, attempt to murder and robbery, was described by the investigators as a heinous criminal who drove around in a white Toyota Corolla car, rob families, rape women and even transgender persons, often seen begging on the roadside.
Though the arrest brought solace to the residents of the vicinities, the trial against the suspects lingered on as the victims failed to appear before the court to testify against them. However, not a single rape charge has been proven against him.
Since the sentences will run concurrently, rather then consecutively, he wil therefore be punished for only one robbery irrespective of how many other crimes he may have committed. More ever , as par the Pakistani judicial system. a day and a night is taken as 2 days, therefore his actual sentence served will not be more than 7.5 years. With time out for ‘good’ behavior. Therefore even if he is convicted in all 33 cases, The odds are he will be back on the streets within 6 to 7 years max.
