Officials have transferred Sindh Higher Education Commission (HEC) chairman Dr Asim Hussain into the custody of Rangers personnel earlier today.
Officials in plain clothes had raided the Sindh HEC office the previous day, taking the former petroleum minister away to an undisclosed location for questioning. It was initially unclear if Dr Asim had been formally detained or on what charges he was being questioned as no investigative agency or law enforcement department issued an official comment regarding the incident.
But sources said today that the Sindh HEC chairman has now been transferred into the custody of Rangers personnel, who are expected to present him in an anti-terrorism court around noon.
The sources said that security officials are expected to seek permission for a 90-day detention of Dr Asim. The sources added that during interrogation by officials of an intelligence agency, the former federal minister agreed to provide information related to some key personalities and alleged money-laundering worth billions of rupees.
Dr Asim is considered a close aide of former president and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari. He has previously served as the federal minister for petroleum during the PPP government. He is currently serving as the chairman of the Higher Education Commission (HEC) in Sindh.
