The first death anniversary of the sufi Qawaal, Amjad Farid Sabri being observed today.
Amjad Farid Sabri was gunned down at Liaquatabad Town in Karachi in broad daylight on the 16th of Ramazan.
Amjad Sabri’s family decided to hold his first death anniversary on the Islamic date of his death.
A splinter group of the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan who had earlier accused the qawwal of blasphemy. Sabri s last song on TV included the words, “When I shudder in my dark tomb, dear Prophet, look after me.”
Sabri, the son and nephew of renowned qawwali icons Ghulam Farid Sabri and Maqbool Sabri, respectively, was himself one of South Asia’s most popular singers of Qawwali – the Sufi devotional music that dates back over 700 years.
The late star’s immortal voice will continue to remind Pakistan of its rich music tradition and its survival story through the multitude of problems facing the music industry.
